About Me
Welcome! My name is Raisa Shams and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in New Jersey. Additionally, I am an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) trained therapist.
I completed my Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Rutgers University - New Brunswick in 2014 and my Masters Degree in Professional Counseling and Educational Specialist degree from Seton Hall University in 2017. I have 8 years of experience in the mental health field. I have worked in a variety of settings from community mental health, intensive in-community/in-home, and group private practice.
Starting therapy can be intimidating! I use person-centered approaches to build rapport and trust with my clients in order to help them feel comfortable and safe. Additionally, I use a variety of therapeutic modalities depending on each client’s unique goals. As an EMDR therapist, I also work with clients who want to overcome trauma. It brings me great joy to be a part of the journey and witness my clients’ progress towards healing.
I enjoy working with teens and adults, as well as the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. I am a South Asian therapist who connects strongly with clients of similar cultural backgrounds.
In my spare time I enjoy watching movies and TV shows, going to the beach, exercising, and spending time with loved ones.
