About Me

Welcome! My name is Raisa Shams and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in New Jersey. Additionally, I am an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) trained therapist.

I completed my Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Rutgers University - New Brunswick in 2014 and my Masters Degree in Professional Counseling and Educational Specialist degree from Seton Hall University in 2017. I have 10 years of experience in the mental health field. I have worked in a variety of settings from community mental health, intensive in-community/in-home, and group private practice.

Starting therapy can be intimidating! I use person-centered approaches to build rapport and trust with my clients in order to help them feel comfortable and safe. Additionally, I use a variety of therapeutic modalities depending on each client’s unique goals. As an EMDR therapist, I also work with clients who want to overcome trauma. It brings me great joy to be a part of the journey and witness my clients’ progress towards healing.

I enjoy working with teens and adults, as well as the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. I am a South Asian therapist who connects strongly with clients of similar cultural backgrounds.

In my spare time I enjoy watching movies and TV shows, reading, going to the beach, exercising, and spending time with loved ones.

To share one of my favorite quotes form one of my favorite shows…

“Sometimes life is like this tunnel. You can’t always see the light at the end of the tunnel, but if you keep moving… you will come to a better place.”
